NEAR Val Verde County, Tx STATESIDE

Garner State Park

Named for a famed Vice-President

Copmfortable place for kids to get wet in the steam

While parents hang out under some trees.

You can climb that mountainous hill, right up on top

There's the vestige of the bottom of a cave

That is not.

At dusk, you will see Armadillos come up to beg

When they're not rooting and snorting around the edge of your tent

In the middle of the night, scare you out of your wits.

Leaky

Roadside view in Leaky, Texas

Another trick to spot those not from 'round here

By how they let fall certain names to the ear

Like this pretty little town that ain't really there

Just a wide spot with shade and cute little stream

Running clear and green between the cyprus trees.

Wake me, shake me, while my heart’s so achy-breaky,

How should one pronounce the place that goes by the name of Leaky?

Quemado

(Spanish for "Burned")

This place was named by Vikings who came

From Iceland, another place they named to keep people away

From a place too pretty and green to believe.

If nobody comes, don't ask them to leave.

Eagle Pass:

Chicano pronunciation: "Eeeg-lay  Paaahsz"

There used to be migrant village down under the bridge

Where the Kickapoo Indians were permitted to live

Built of wooden palettes and cardboard tied together with wire

And strips of rubber innertubes, looked like rounded beehives.

Now they all cross the border with their special status

As the only ethnic group allowed to slip past us

Heading to northern states working agriculture

From their Mexican hide-away, beyond Musquiz Melchor

Originally driven from cold central Wisconsin

They've made all North America their grounds for stompin'

The tribe's succesful with a gambling casino

The village chief's a politician 'cause he knows

He's held his fire till he sees the white of their lies

Couln't care less until the buses arrive

Filled with gamblers from everywhere this side of San Antone

To hear the live music and feed his little one-armed drones.

An East Coast female journalist who invented Manifest Destiny

Claimed those years living on the riveredge "seemed the best to me"

Living in a house of cane, which she called the birdcage

She and her Indian lover rode horses and sang

As the sun would set over the sleepy Mexican town

And rise over US, until it was again sundown.

Comstock

(We're still looking for this place, rumored to be on the north side of Lake Amistad.)

Caverns of Sonora

It's not a huge scary cave filled with underground rivers and blind white toads with ooze and stuff under your shoes, it's a couple of hours North out of Del Rio and renown as the World's Most Beautiful Cave. Let the JRBs show you its splendor, with over 90% of the walls' surface area covered with incredible mineral deposits, growths, and drippings. In all seriousness, both Doctor John Romulus Brinkley and Judge Roy Bean both repeatedly say:

        "Don't miss it."
